Why Is My Bok Choy Flowering?

I planted it in mid-March in a container with good soil but it never got very big. I thinned it just recently and as soon as I thinned it, it bolted into flowering. The leaves are not very tightly packed as I was expecting. What did I do wrong? Or does it keep growing after it flowers? I live in Virginia.

It is bolting and is pretty much shot. It happens when the soil gets hotter than the plant likes. It accelerates the flowering process and the plant flowers before it is ready.

At this point in time, you can still eat the plant, but it will not taste as good and they will not grow any larger.
