Why Don’t My Tomatoes Turn Red on the Plants

I have 6 very healthy looking tomato plants, which have produced only 3 beautiful delicious red tomatoes. Since then I only have green tomatoes. The plants have many green tomatoes but not a red one, nor any that look like they are in the process of turning red. The plants are pretty close together since they grew rather large. Could they be blocking the sun, and would that be part of the problem?

This summer has been very hot for most of the country. When temperatures rise above 90F and do not drop into the 70’s at night, many varieties of tomatoes will slow down and even stop the ripening process. Extra watering can help to bring down the air temp around the tomatoes, but really, what you need are some cooler nights.
