Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comWhy do the plants I have on the patio develop big white spots on the leaves and die, or before death millions of tiny flies all in the pot. I have just cut back all the leaves, and it seems to be perking up. But my indoor plants are lovely. Can you help me please?

Did this happen soon after being taken out onto the patio? If so, then they are developing sun scald, which is a result of the plant not being acclimated before being taken outside. It is a little like sun burn for plants. A severe case can kill a plant, but a mild case weakens the plant – which then makes the plant attractive to pests, such as the fungus gnats you are seeing in the soil.

Oh, and if you don’t think it is sun scald, it may be a fungus of some kind. Try treating the plant with a fungicide. Neem oil is nice because it not only takes care of the fungus, but will take care of the soil gnats as well. It is also organic and harmless to people and pets.
