why do lemons from meyer lemon tree have very thick skins

Why does my Meyer lemon tree produce thick skinned, small meat lemons? The tree spent its first 3-4 years in a pot and was not producing any lemons. I planted it in the ground, fertilized it and for the past several years has been prolific. However, the skins are thick and the meat is very small. Anything I can do?
