Why do the leaves of yucca plants go brown at the tip and how can I avoid this?

This is likely due to overwatering, though it can also be caused by underwatering. Water the soil when the soil is dry up to your first knuckle.

Thanks for that they are in a position where they get quite a good amount of water in winter but get very dry in the summer so will try to manage that better.
