This time I grew them in the greenhouse which has a heater, and the soil of which I had used a granual organic fertiliser and had watered the area well. The variety that I grew was French Breakfast

This is most often caused by too much nitrogen in the soil. Soil for root plants, such as these, will need quite a bit more phosphorus, and much less nitrogen.
