Why do bird of paradise flowers show up at the bottom of the plant instead of at the top?

I have no picture, this odd thing has happened twice.

Answer 1

Are you possibly pruning off the flower buds at the top to achieve height reduction?
Or are you fertilizing with a high Nitrogen product that stimulates vegetative growth at the expense of flower development?
Other than that, we would need a photo and to know more about the growing conditions, soil and water management.
