Why Did My Variegated Hostas Turn Green

This past spring we moved to a different house and I brought along differentt varieties of Hosta. The soil here is all sand. When I transplanted them, I added black dirt to the soil. They get half sun and half shade during the summer months. The variegated variety and the yellow and green variety turned all green. Why is that and will fertilizing them help?
