Why Are The Leaves On My Japanese Maple Turning Tan In The Middle, Feel Brittle To Touch And Wilting?

The tree is several feet from our fire pit. Would smoke have caused this problem? It is occurring on all the leaves.

If you're sure your tree is getting enough water, there are some other possibilities. I doubt that the tree appreciates heavy smoke, but this sounds more like something systemic. I hope these articles will help:
