Q.Why Are My Vining Plants Dying?

Zone 85295 | Anonymous added on January 19, 2025 | Answered

This past season, virtually every one of my vining plants died. It would start at the base and slowly work out to the ends. Leaves would turn brown and fall off, blooms and young fruit would wilt and die as the disease (?) would get to them. Only vining plants seemed to be affected! Cucumbers, squash, watermelon, etc. peppers and tomatoes seem to be fine. I’m planting in raised beds with block walls. I live in Phoenix area.

If it started at the base, I would look to a root problem, such as root rot. Check the drainage in the area your vining plants grow. You may need to add some amendments to improve drainage. Also make sure you aren't overwatering in those areas. These articles should help:

(Also, you can search our database for specific plants and find more information about diseases that plague those plants.) https://www.gardeningknowhow.com
