why are my hibiscus flowers breaking off the stems before they bloom?

Why are my hibiscus flowers breaking off the stems before they bloom? They are inside and in a pot with a lot of peat moss.

Could something be eating them? You could take the plant outside and pull it out of the pot, check the peat moss and around the roots for invaders. Also, I’ve seen mice bite through stems just below the leaves, presumably to get the moisture in the stems. If the flower stems are soft, brown and wilty before the buds fall off, try increasing the light – that’s always the first thing to try with flowering plants indoors. And don’t fertilize too much, and use high-middle-number when you do.
