Why are dieffenbachia leaves falling off?

It has the bright red leaves , goes from green to red.
Just bought it and the pot is stuffed. I mean there is the main stem (very mature) about 3 feet tall and then 2 more Stems in same pot that are 1 foot tall all in 12″ pot. How do I separate them and repot them into 3 pots without killing them?

Leaf dropping could be due to watering issues; too much or too little.
Humidity could also be low in your home.
