white spots on figs

Picked fresh figs this a.m. A lot of them have tiny, round white spots on the round end. Easy to scratch off and leaves have no discoloration or mark of any kind. Are they safe to eat or is this some kind of fungus? The tree has not been taken care of, not pruned ever, etc. So sunlight doesn’t get to the branches and leaves.

It actually sounds like scale, which is a pest. The fruit are safe to eat. Treat the tree with a pesticide though as the scale can weaken the tree. Neem oil is a good choice as it is organic and food safe.
