White Bird of Paradise

I have a white bird of paradise growing in a pot in my house. I have had this plant for 20 years but it has grown too tall. How can I cut it to make it shorter. What tool do I use and how much can I take off the top of the plant?

Unfortunately this plant is going to be a tall variety. It would not be safe to cut anything at the crown of the plant, as this will kill it. The only thing you can do it take off a few leaves, or "branches" without taking too many at a time.
