Q.Which varieties of male kiwi pollinate the Vincent kiwi?
I planted a male kiwi vine about 15 yrs ago and is now a BIG healthy vine, now in flower, but I don’t know what variety it is. I just bought a Vincent kiwi hoping she will eventually bear fruit. But I read that the Vincent should be pollinated by the Tomusi male. When I examine the male Tomusi leaf and compare it to my unknown male vine, the Tomusi leaf is furrier on both underside and top side than my male. My male’s leaves are also rounder, less heart-shaped than the Tomusi. So I don’t know if my smooth-leaved kiwi will be a pollinator for the Vincent kiwi. If you can identify my male from the attached photo, what female Kiwi will be a match for my male vine?
15 years ago there were not all the varieties available to home gardeners that there are now.
There are crosses now that are hardy-and non hardy, fuzzy leaved and non fuzzy leaved, information can be a bit fuzzy!
In my research I did find that a Fuzzy Male Kiwi Actinidia deliciosa will pollinate a Vincent Kiwi.
It is doubtful that your smooth leaved male that you have will not act as a pollinator.
It is not likely that you can identify the variety that you have, unless you dig back to find out who the grower was and what varieties that they were growing and selling at the time.
