Which Plants And Flowers Will Thrive (in Pots Or In The Ground) In Zone 9 At 3300 Feet?

Question

I moved from Hawaii, where I fell in love with tropical flowers and plants, to the high desert in Arizona, where temperatures range from the 20s in winter to 115 in summer. What trees, flowers and plants can survive here, in pots or in the ground? I have full sun and partial shade if planted in the ground, and both front and back patios with different sunlight and shade, so there is some flexibility. Thank you for your help!
