Where to cut off a “dead” flower

After a long struggle growing a Gardenia, we now have a bush with over a dozen buds that have just started to open. The question is: once the flower has withered, where is the best place to make the cut so that new buds will form? Just below the flower, down to the next leaf, or even a bit more to cut it back a bit? Also, do the buds form on both the old and new wood?

Either right behind the bud or down next to the leaves will work when deadheading. Bud do form on all woods.
