Where Should You Plant Onions in Your Garden?

I’ve heard that you aren’t supposed to plant certain plants on the same site where other plants have grown (for example, tomatoes). Is this true, and if so, what other plants if any are like this. I am going to be planting onions, and am concerned where I should plant them in my garden.
