when to top off and sheer off a ficus tree used as a screen.

We have used ficus trees as a screen on the north side of a condominium. the last time they were topped off and sheered off on the street side of the trees was last year, about this time, when about 5 or 6 feet was lopped off the top. The trees have never been pruned. They have filled in, and now are beginning to grow to the same height as when they last ‘trimmed.’ Is it good for the trees to be ‘lopped’ so to speak?
I have been told that winter is the best time to trim, particularly January and February, when they are supposedly dormant. I’ve read that ‘winter’ is the best time to trim them. Can you tell me what months belong to the ‘winter’ season, and if it is actually correct to trim then. Is it really best to trim them in January and February or can they be trimmed anytime during the winter months for good results?

When your trees are not actively growing is the best time to trim, usually December, January or February. Ficus are often trimmed to retain a size so what you are doing is fine. Here's an article about how to prune ficus trees: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/houseplants/ficus/trimming-ficus-trees.htm [1]
