When to Prune a Potted Fig Tree

Question

We purchased a fig tree last summer and put the pot into the ground. In the fall, we live in northern MI, we brought it into the house. At that time it had 3 immature figs on it. They eventually ripened in December. The plant has four tall spike branches where the figs were. Should I trim it back now (February) or leave it alone. We will put it back outside after danger of frost in late May. Thanks, Carol

I would not prune it after leaves have appeared. It makes it more susceptible to disease if it is pruned after it comes out of dormancy. This article will help you with the pruning:

Hi Carol~
I too have a fig tree in a container and thought I would share how I take care of mine. The above link in the last answer is more about transplanting a fig tree.
Container grown fig trees yield as much fruit as those planted in the ground, but they require different care. They need more fertilizer, lime, and water.
Fig trees are productive with or without heavy pruning and is essential only during the initial years. All pruning should take place while the tree is dormant. If the tree has leaves, you must wait until after the last frost.

Also, trees may be transplanted to a larger container every year until you have reached the largest pot that you want. At this point the tree should be ‘root’ pruned every three years and replaced in the same pot.

Thanks so much for your help….I have decided to just leave the fig alone as it has leaves at the top of every branch. I’ll put it outdoors in late May and see what happens. I appreciate your information.
