Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comWe live in Maryland. I planted a Chicago fig last fall. It is almost May now but the fig shows no sign of life. Is it possible that the tree is dead (we had a very cold winter) or is the fig like the crepe myrtle, slow to emerge from dormancy?

I would say your tree is probably just slow to emerge from dormancy. Some trees will be a little late on breaking dormancy because it’s been so cold this spring. It is frustrating when the trees have their own timeline and agenda for “waking up” that does not match our expectations!
