Q.When Do I Plant Clethra Alnifolia Outside?

Zone 5b | karynhood added on September 28, 2012 | Answered

We just purchased a clethra shrub and are wondering if it should be put in the ground right away. It is currently late September and we live in Maine, zone 5b. Would it be better to keep it indoors until spring? The shrub is 4 feet tall and 21 inches wide.

With proper care and protection, fall planting is fine. However, as long as it;s in a container and kept in an unheated area, like a garage or basement, you may be able to overwinter the shrub as it will need to enter dormancy.
