Q.When Can I Remove Rabbit And Deer Protection From Young Oak Trees?

Zone Rock Island, IL zone 5 | Anonymous added on May 8, 2022 | Answered

Hello, I was wondering when can I remove the 4′ chicken wire cages I have around 3 year old 6′ – 7′ tall red oaks? there is a good population of deer and rabbits in the area but the cages need replaced and was wondering if they were still necessary and what good options there might be for replacements. Thanks

The protection is more for newly planted and young trees. Since yours are established, you can see how it goes without the cages. If you start to see damage, you may want to reinvest in fencing or caging.
