when can i prune my rose of sharon shrub

When can I prune my rose of sharon shrub? Should I do it now before new buds form or should I wait until the buds have formed and then prune? My rose of sharon is now almost ten feet tall and I want to reduce it down to five feet.

Thank you for sending us your gardening question. Rose of Sharon is actually a variety of hardy hibiscus. Therefore, pruning takes place in spring–specifically anytime from late March through early May, before the leaf buds open. Overgrown shrubs can be pruned back to about three feet in height without risk of injury. Then you should perform annual trimming to to keep its appearance maintained, removing any unsightly or overgrown branches only.
