Traditional azaleas bloom on old wood so they start forming next year's buds after the spring flush. To avoid trimming buds off, always prune, if necessary, soon after their spring bloom. For reblooming azaleas, you also prune if needed after the spring bloom. They then are setting buds for the next bloom cycle.
