Q.What’s Wrong With My Rose?

Zone 47167, zone 6 | Hank22077 added on July 31, 2020 | Answered

I’m new to roses, gardening in general. This is a newly planted bush and I’m trying to figure out if it has black spot or cankers or what it is. Doesn’t really look like anything I’ve seen online searching for answers. Thanks for any help

It looks like rose canker. The remedy is to cut out all the black canes but yours look completely black. Scrape off some of the wood and if it is green underneath, it is still alive. If it is brown, your rose has succumbed to the disease.

Winter kill also produces black canes, but considering the time of year, cankers seem like the culprit.

Thank you Susan. I trimmed the longest cane almost to the ground and it's completely brown inside.
Looks like I'll have to try again.
Should I plant another in a different spot to try to avoid infection?
Thanks again
