For a large tree it's best to contact a certified arborist. An overly severe pruning can kill the tree, and any major pruning should not be done in late summer or fall if you want the tree to blossom next year. An arborist will help you decide how and how much to prune your tree. You may also want to consult with your local agricultural extension agency.
