Q.What variety of pie cherry?
I had a pie cherry tree that recently broke off in a storm. We loved this tree and would like to replace it with the same variety, but do not know the variety. It produced a great yield of red-skin, yellow-meat pie (tart) cherries every year, without fail, even when there was a late frost (it was very hardy). The cherries ripened early–right around Memorial weekend, or shortly thereafter. I live in NE Kansas (zone 5b). Any idea what variety of cherry it might have been? The varieties I have seen in local nurseries claim they don’t ripen until July–I would much rather have my early-ripening variety.

My best guesses are that it is a north star cherry:

or a montmorency pie cherry
