What type of “tubular” roots are these?

I have discovered a very invasive root system when taking out some calla lilies and bird of paradise plants. The roots have grown over 10 feet long in places. The roots are “tubular” with a small “string” inside. Some are longer than 10 feet! My question is: Do I have to remove ALL these roots before replanting something else? Will they regrow even at 3 ft. under the soil? I just keep digging and they keep showing up. HELP!

I will get a pic to you ASAP. (As soon as my “tennis elbow” heals from all the digging). Thank you for taking the time to help me!!! Jana
