What type of “tubular” roots are these?

I have discovered a very invasive root system when taking out some calla lilies and bird of paradise plants. The roots have grown over 10 feet long in places. The roots are “tubular” with a small “string” inside. Some are longer than 10 feet! My question is: Do I have to remove ALL these roots before replanting something else? Will they regrow even at 3 ft. under the soil? I just keep digging and they keep showing up. HELP!
