what type of tree/shrub is this?

When we moved in about four years ago, we cleaned all the weeds and poison ivy out of a small shrub. It has since flourished into this (see photo). This year it started producing green apples all over, and some small red berries at bottom. Are these apples edible? Is this actually an apple tree (doesn’t really look like one…Lol) Thank you for your help! 🙂

This is a Rose of Sharon bush (https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/shrubs/rose-of-sharon/rose-of-sharon-bush.htm [1]). The berries you see may be a weed intertwined with the bush that has leaves similar to the Rose of Sharon. The apples might be galls. Would you send us a photo of the apples and the berries so we may confirm? Thanks!

This is Rose of Sharon, also known as hibiscus.
