Q.What Type Of Ground Cover Will Grow In Sand?

Zone 98922 | Becky.houle added on April 11, 2020 | Answered

My beds have a weed blanket barrier with sand on top. I’m looking for something that will easily spread to cover the sand. I’d like something that I can simply throw out (versus intentionally plant) that has color, that spreads, but is also easily maintained. I live in a Zone 7 area. Thank you!

Unfortunately, you are VERY limited. Sand will not contain enough nutrients to support most plants. Some cacti succulents will do fine, but not much else.

I would try the plants in this article, as some of them may tolerate those parameters:

What will be most likely to grow in sand will be succulents.

This article will help, though you will need to check their hardiness to make sure that they will thrive in zone 6:
