Q.flowers/plants grown with periwinkle

Zone chicago area | mbrashler added on August 14, 2015 | Answered

I have a large area with this ground cover under some rose of sharon shrubs along with Annabelle hydrangea and hostas. I would like to add other flowering plants but I’m concerned the vinca will eventually choke out the flowers. Do you have any suggestions?

Hello,
Thank you for sending us your gardening question.

Yes, Periwinkle can become invasive and overtake plants.
From personal experience though I have not had an issue. I have Vinca vine planted along the back of a retaining wall where my perennial bed is.
Most of my perennials are larger scale and I do think this helps.
