Q.What to Plant With New Grape Plants

Anonymous added on June 5, 2011 | Answered

We just built a new grape arbor and planted our grapevine plants last week. I would like to also grow some other plants around the arbor. I’m thinking about planting climbing roses. Will this interfere with the grapevine growth?

The roses could interfere some if you do not keep them each pruned back a bit away from each other. Give them their own space while allowing them to grow and fill in closely to one another and you should be fine. It is something you will have to keep an eye on though as both will try to invade the others space. Some climbing roses that do well with the arbors are: Awakening, America, New Dawn, Joseph's Coat and Don Juan. The grapevines actually do very well at fending for themselves.
