Q.What To Plant Under An Old Established Maple

Hello! Our neighbors have a massive maple tree that provides morning shade over a corner in our yard. Unfortunately, the roots prevent growth in this corner of our yard. We want to plant something as a focal point or create a hill (with soil) or a floating deck. We are looking for recommendations for this area that receives afternoon sun from the west. We dont want to damage the tree. Thanks!

Whatever you do in that area, it will be best not to cover the roots, which could damage the tree. A layer of mulch is fine, if you just want to hide the roots. If you create a berm, make sure it begins past the tree roots and canopy, not under it.
