What to Do With Black on Crepe Myrtles

My two acoma crepe myrtles went into winter with black sooty mold covering every branch, now spring it is still there, what should i do and how do i prevent it? I heard of putting bayer systemic rose food as soon as I see the leaves budding, has anyone tryed this?

The sooty mold is caused by a pest infestation. The mold feeds off the honeydew secreted by these pests. There are several it could be, but they are all treated with the same pesticides.

I would recommend treating the tree with neem oil (it is often sold as fruit tree oil – check the label). The neem oil will kill the pests causing the mold and will help clear up the mold itself. Bonus is that it is safe for people, pets and friendly bugs.
