What to do about a lanky, unhealthy camellia

Question

We have 2 very old camellias that are under an overhang on the southern exposure of our house. They haven’t ever done well. My husband was painting and did a poor job of cutting all the plants that were in the way of his scaffolding. Now those 2 plants are looking terrible. Is there any way to save these 2 camellias?
