Exposed Damage of Crepe Myrtle Tree

My crepe myrtle tree trunk split in half due to a heavy snow fall. I want to save the remaining half, which is still standing, if possible. What should I use to protect the exposed portion of the tree trunk? This area is approximately 12 inches long and maybe 4 inches wide. I have been advised to apply something on this exposed area. What would you suggest? Thank you for your help.

I would recommend that you only apply fungicide to help keep rot out. Any of the other sealers that are on the market actually do more harm than good to an open tree wound. Often, they trap disease and fungus in the wound and don’t allow the wound to have proper air flow, so they become damaged under the seal. Trees will heal themselves if the wound is left open. Just treat with a fungicide and keep a sharp eye for pests and treat for those as well if you see any.
