My grass is St. Augustine

You can use a postemergence herbicide anytime weeds are actively growing. Just make sure St. Augustine is listed on the label as a grass that will not be harmed. St. Augustine is the most popular lawn grass in Florida. At the end of the weed's life cycle, when seeds are forming, it is too late to apply weed killer. The best you can do is keep the grass and weeds mowed so the seeds don't mature and disperse.
In the spring, you can apply preemergence herbicides that prevent certain weeds from growing. In Florida, the timing is about when the azaleas and dogwoods are blooming or around Feb. 15 in central Florida.
