What Should I Fertilise My Fig Tree With?

I have one fig tree in a pot, and usually use some cow poo or dynamic lifter. Mulch is a mixture of fresh comfrey and canna lily – should I age this before adding it to the pot? The soil is a bought potting mix.

Generally, these plants draw all the nutrients they require from the soil; therefore, regular fertilizing of figs is not usually necessary except for potted trees or those growing in poor soil. Yours sounds like it has fairly healthy soil, so unless you are seeing problems, I wouldn’t worry about it too much. However, the following information may be helpful:

The fig tree mostly requires potassium but does not need much nitrogen fertilizer. In well-balanced soil, use a fertilizer such as 4-8-12 or 10-20-25 which means (N-Nitrogen/P-Phosphorus/K-potassium). In poor soil, use compost with the addition of potassium sulfate. Fertilize at the end of winter.
