What Plants Or Dwarf Trees Grows Best In A Large Pot

I wanted dogwood but was told roots grow too fast. I already have a Japanese maple. I wanted a plant with color that will grow in a mostly shady location.

Coleus will be pretty around it but you would have to replant every year. Here are more ideas:
