If you are growing in containers, for flowers, I would recommend almost any of the normal annuals that you will find, like petunias, marigolds, violas and flowering annuals like that. While they do not come back year after year, they will give a good show all summer and fall long. There are simply not that many perennials that can do that. Any size container will do for these kinds of annuals. As for vegetables, you are pretty open to whatever you want to grow that grows well in the ground in your area. Tomatoes and peppers are popular choices, but lettuce, corn, cucumbers and just about any vegetable grows well in containers. Something that is at least 5 gallons will work best for growing each plant. You may want to consider growing upside-down plants to maximize your space.
