What kind of fertlizer do fig trees need?

I have 2 fig trees that I just bought and they need to be planted. How far apart should I plant them? I live in Louisville, Ky. Also, what is best to fertilize the trees with? One is a Chicago Hardy and the other had no name, but is an older tree and has more branches and leaves with tiny figs already forming.
