What is wrong with my rose bush?

I have an old fashioned rose with canes turning dark brown from ground up and losing ability to stand erect. Ends are still green with healthy appearing leaves and some buds still.

It could be a form of canker. Here are a couple articles that may be of help to you. Also be sure no dogs have used the area for a bathroom, as they can kill a rosebush with signs like you mention.
