The single most important thing is to start with a reliable soil test. Some of the commonly available pH testers on the market do not have good reviews for accuracy when tested by independent labs. Testing with your state extension service will give you instructions on how to lower pH for the plant(s) you are growing. Some amendments are fast acting and others are much slower to change pH. The type of soil you have and the amount of calcium carbonate (limestone) and other minerals also plays a role. Sandy vs. clay soil affects the application rate.
