What Is Best To Cover A Large Shaded Area And Easy To Install?

We had vinca for some areas but it did not spread quickly enough and the grass and weeds won out. Is there anythiing else that might be better that is easier to establish than by going one plant at a time? I have pics of where the vinca grew well and where it did not spread well.

I could recommend something like deadnettle, since it does grow very quickly. Many consider this plant a weed, but it is a reliable grower, and nice looking. Not only that, but is edible, too!
