What Exactly Are Sweet Potato “slips?”

I am confused about “slips” to grow sweet potatoes. You say they are pieces of a sweet potato. What, just chop them up and plant them?

Here's an article that will help you create a slip for yourself. Remember, a sweet potato grows under the ground, so it looks like creating a slip simply means letting one sprout leaves.
