Q.What container plant would thrive in hot sun & provide shade?

Zone 7A | kj1958 added on April 10, 2012 | Answered

The west side of my house is completely unshaded. Until trees are planted, which grow large enough to provide shade, I’d like to hang some container pots that would grow large enough to shade our porch, even if that means hanging several containers. Boston ferns have the look I like, but don’t thrive in full sun. Any suggestions? Zone 7a.

To be honest, I would look at sedums. Many are trailing and would drape over the side of the containers and can take heat and dry conditions that inevitably occur with containers in full, direct sun.

Petunias might also work, but you would likely need to water them twice a day.
