What color should a fig look like when it is ready to pick?

This is the first year our fig tree has produced any figs on the tree. We are not sure if the color of the fruit is ready for harvesting. The fruit is drumming but the skin has a yellow coloring. I do not know if this is the right color for the skin for us to pick the fruit. I do not know the type of fig tree we planted. We got the tree at Wal Mart.
