leaves on houseplants have brown on the tips

My plant is in the east window and the ends of the leaves are brown and dry. What causes this? Is it too much water or too much sun?

This could be normal aging of plant leaves.
Yellowing leaves generally can indicate watering issues, to much or to little.
Always a good idea to check the water moisture by feeling of the soil before watering. Most plants require watering when the first inch or so of soil has dried out.
Make sure the you have a pot with good quality potting soil and a adequate drainage hole.

Also if the water you are using is conditioned or treated water, the salts can build up in the plant and cause leaves to brown.
If you can’t use untreated water, letting the water sit 24 hours before using can help with this.
