plant suggestions

What can I plant that’s somewhat tall and will grow next to a brick chimney on the south side of our house? I have a place about 3’x3′ next to a brick chimney that gets mid-morning to late afternoon sun. I’d like something that will grow about 6 feet. I prefer fragrant flowers, but any suggestion is appreciated. We live in northwest Ohio near Toledo. Would a large sunflower (I know that would be taller than 6 feet and really no fragrance) work? I could put a small (narrow) trellis if there’s something that would climb. As you can tell, I’m flexible. Just need some ideas.

In terms of fragrant flower options, I would have recommended lilacs, roses or jasmine bushes because there are many varieties around 6 foot tall but the spread of each typically exceeds the 3 foot space you have allotted. For more information on fragrant flowers, please visit the following link:

Sunflowers would work great so long as you have full sun (6+ hours of sun per day). For more information on growing sunflowers, please visit the following link:

A small trellis is also a nice option. There are many fragrant climbing plants from which you can choose which can be found at the following link with full color photos. Whatever you choose, just be sure it’s hardy to zone 6.
